It’s Gemini Season! So let’s look at Mercury in Synastry
Happy Gemini Season!
Celebrating the beginning of Gemini season, let's look at how the Gemini ruling planet Mercury functions in synastry!
If you have any placements in Gemini or Virgo, Mercury is an important planet for you - even if you're not a Gemini or Virgo sun.
EW Neville, the author of one of my favorite synastry textbooks, considers Mercury synastry to be of lesser importance than other planets - and I understand why. On its surface, Mercury is not intimately connected to love, romance, or the more visceral aspects of sex and matters of the heart. Like most planets associated with air signs, Mercury is hard to understand. But, as I always say: ignore planets in synastry at your peril. Especially since for 1/6th of the zodiac (Gemini and Virgo) Mercury is a personal planet - and personal planets are ALWAYS important in synastry (even outer planets).
If you are a Gemini or Virgo sun, Mercury transits AND Mercury synastry aspects will hit you a little more than usual - it's definitely something to pay attention to. In synastry, check your partner's Mercury too. I believe that in relationship astrology the way your own prominent planets behave in your partner's chart are a significant indicator of how well you will understand one another.
And Mercury is all about understanding. You can think of it as the “everyday” version of Uranus, its higher octave. Mercury is the closest celestial body to us aside from the Moon - and that physical closeness translates directly to how it can be interpreted in mundane and relationship astrology. The way your Mercury interacts with your partner’s will give you insights into how well you all will get along every day. What will your conversations be like? How will you resolve disagreements? How will you joke around? How will you talk about difficult subjects? How charitable will you be in your reactions to one another? Much of this comes back to Mercury - because it’s through Mercury that many of your private feelings are interpreted, turned into thoughts, and then expressed.
It’s important to see how Mercury interacts with the partner’s Moon. In my view, this is the most important synastry aspect for Mercury. Moon is entirely irrational, it is hidden, unseen, subconscious and emotional, reactive and much closer to the id - Mercury is quite different, dealing entirely with the rational and pragmatic world of the conscious mind and superego. The way these two very different energies interact in synastry will lend a lot of insight into how your everyday relationship could be. Easy aspects like the trine and sextile will allow Mercury to alchemize the subjective aspirations of the partner’s Moon into something tangible and real - Mercury is associated with alchemical marriage, after all. Difficult aspects could cause Mercury to regard the Moon partner with detachment, disinterest or even derision - they may see them as delusional or hysterical. Conversely, the Moon person may long for a level of interest in their dreams that the Mercury person just cannot provide. Mars and Saturn will also play a role here, so check those aspects to both planets as well.
