Venus and Pluto in Synastry
Venus/Pluto. What a combo. The synastry contact that everyone loves to hate.
It's a little scary, a little obsessive, a little dangerous, very intense. It has all that spice we really want in a relationship, however taboo it might be to admit. Venus is so personal and intimate, it is one of the closest planets to us, immediate and earthy; while Pluto is far away and slow moving, a truly "cosmic" generational influence that is almost alien to us.
Over the years I've realized that harsh and difficult aspects and difficult planets in synastry are often quite good. They keep things from becoming stagnant and boring, even in long term relationships spanning years. Harsh aspects and malefic planets can create the movement and friction that causes sparks to fly, provided they are between complimentary yin/yang planets. And nothing could be more yin/yang than Venus/Pluto.
For me, the opposition actually works best. Why? These two are naturally opposed. Their domicile signs of Taurus and Scorpio form an axis in the zodiac, and think about what they represent: Taurus/Venus is your personal value, wealth, and security; and Scorpio/Pluto is OTHER people's value, wealth and security. Pluto is not only the king of the underworld in his mythological origins; his name "Pluto" comes from "Ploutos" which means "wealth", the abundance of the earth. Pluto wants it all, and when in opposition, it wants it from Venus, who is the very embodiment of "earthly riches".
Pluto is attracted to Venus when its expression is natural, unpretentious and easy; when Venus engages in its more negative behavior, such as subterfuge, fickleness, excessively "diplomatic" behavior, Pluto's urge to consume and destroy becomes very strong. Pluto wants to strip away these aspects of Venus and force Venus's authentic expression only - in Venus, Pluto sees a project to both capture and re-shape into something more suitable.
And of course, Pluto rules sex as well as death - so a Venus/Pluto sexual relationship will have the characteristics of a Mars/Venus relationship, but at a much higher level. Urgent, explosive, unable to keep their hands off each other. Pluto wants it a lot more than Venus, but can wait a very long time - It’s the slowest planet in the solar system after all. Pluto also prefers to watch Venus squirm, and will periodically withdraw to test how "honest" the Venus person's passion is, and whether it will last. This behavior too mirrors the myth of Pluto and Prosperina - his withdrawal of affection mirrors the changing of the seasons. Venus loves the attention when it's good, and when Pluto withdraws, it's awful. Venus is hypnotically drawn to Pluto, who has the upper hand as the outer planet in the equation. Outer planets are always more powerful in their influence to personal planets in synastry. Pluto also has a tendency to become obsessive and possessive over the Venus person, and Venus may become excessively needy for Pluto's affection and approval.
For me, Venus/Pluto is one of the best aspects in a love synastry, even though it's "bad" or "dangerous". These types of emotions are not really acceptable to have in today's world, but I think a little jealousy, possessiveness, and aggression is okay in a romantic affair, as long as both people are able to distinguish fantasy from reality. Everyone wants to feel wanted to some degree, and when Venus/Pluto is functioning well, it can be incredibly satisfying for both parties.
